Caesarian Section versus Vaginal Delivery -What's your Take?

Image
In Nigeria, a lot of women are scared of C/S. If by any chance they are told by their doctor that they have to give birth by C/S, their first reaction is "God Forbid". Most women want to deliver "like the hebrew women" of the bible and they think to do this, it has to be by vaginal delivery. On the other extreme, though this is less common, there are women that opt out of vaginal delivery completely. They do not want the pain and stress associated with Vaginal delivery. However, it is necessary for every woman to be informed about the pros and cons of each route of delivery and make an informed decision from a place of knowledge and not fear or cultural beliefs. Also every woman and baby's circumstance is different and this informs choice of delivery. The ultimate goal is to give birth to a healthy baby, safely and this should be the main factor in deciding route of delivery. Comparison of C/S and Vaginal Delivery. C/S is a surgical operation to deli...

Hello Everyone, How are we doing today? Thanks to everyone that has been reading my posts and following me generally. I spoke about intimate partner violence about 5 days ago, when I introduced it and talked on physical abuse and some of the signs and symptoms. I really liked the feedback.  We started a discussion on whatsapp about it and ladies gave their own perspective of the issue. They however wanted to know what could be done and how women in abusive relationships could protect themselves and how we could help a friend or loved one being abused. I did some research and found some websites that deal with intimate partner violence. First of all, we should all find out if our relationships are healthy by clicking the link below and answering the following relationship questions. http://www.loveisrespect.org/for-someone-else/is-my-relationship-healthy-quiz/ If your relationship is not healthy then what can you do? Hello Beautiful People, I have been a bit under the weather so been unable to post. However, I'm feeling better now. Even good enough to give a health talk to kids of Abbas heart Montesorri school today, on how to stay clean, fit and healthy everyday. Healthy-Pink: Teaching children about Health. Healthy-Pink: Catch them young for health. Healthy Pink: Teaching the beautiful kids of Abbas heart school. Healthy Pink: Beautiful Kids of Abbas Heart School. Healthy-Pink: Caring For your body Parts. Healthy-Pink: Catch Them Young. It is very important to teach children early, healthy habits that will guide them throughout life. Today, I just talked about basic hygiene for kids. Make sure to teach kids to wash their hands properly with soap and water after going to toilet, before eating, after touching pets or playing in the sand.  Also cut their finger nails at least once a week. Wash their hair regularly. For boys everyday, girls at least once in tw...

Intimate Partner Violence - Are you a Victim?

Image
You may already have read of the trending gist on social media. The beautiful, South-African Girl - Karabo Makoena who was killed and burnt by her boyfriend. Image: karabo Makoena (Courtesy Youtube)  Shocking! you may say but that's not the first time we've heard such stories. Something like that made the headlines in Nigeria a few years ago - the banker whose husband stabbed her so many times that her organs were visible. He was later sentenced to death by hanging. Also there's that popular story of the South-African olympic Medalist who shot his girlfriend dead and claimed he thought it was an intruder. Thats in the news, someone we may not know physically. However, this phenomenon is actually so common that almost everyone may know a lady (or man, though this is far less common) who has been beaten black and blue by his/her partner. I personally have friends that were abused by their boyfriends. Infact, one comes to mind. We were in university then, and in front of...

Eating Healthy on a Tight Budget.

Image
Photo credit: Frost illustrated. In Nigeria, with the present recession, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the common man to eat 2 square meals not to talk of eating healthy, nourishing food. The prices of food-stuff and groceries seem to increase any time you go to the market or shops. So the average, every-day person may be finding it difficult to cope. However, we still have to survive and thrive and so we shall. It is very possible to eat meals that are healthy and nourishing while on a tight budget. Let me give you some tips and tricks : Photo credit: The Splendid Table photo credit: Connect Nigeria. If you have children, plan their meals first: Children should always take the first priority when it comes to feeding. This is because children are growing and need all the nutrients they can get. Malnutrition will show on them first and affect them more. Adults are already grown and can compensate better. Generally, for a baby, breast-feed till 6 months. It...

First-Aid Items Every Home Should Have.

Image
Accidents and illness are a sad reality that sometimes plague our world. Most times they come unannounced without giving prior notice but we have to respond to them regardless. As a Mum, Dad or single person, you owe it to yourself and those who depend on you to be prepared. You may even be the one to save a life especially in cases of emergencies where a health facility may not readily be available. So it is quite helpful and important to have a first Aid kit/box with some crucial items from which you can quickly give first-aid pending when you can go to a hospital. The contents of your first aid kit may vary depending on your unique life situation. For instance a mum with kids has to have certain things that a single person may not need. Also if you have a person with a particular illness living with you for example, you have a parent with diabetes or Hypertension living with you, then certain things are needed in your kit. For a home with kids, the following items are necessary: ...

Contraception In A Nutshell.

Image
Hello y'all! Yesterday, I talked on Emergency contraception. I loved the feedback. Though people did'nt comment on the post (I wonder why!), I got some mails and on whatspp (we have a healthy-pink group) we got an interesting conversation going. That prompted this post. I got to know that even though a lot of women are curious about contraception, there is a sort of cultural unacceptability in Nigeria about it. It's as if there is an unwritten cultural code to stay away from it, even among the elite. Also, there is widespread ignorance about contraception in Nigeria. One lady said though she had heard about it, she was'nt sure what it is, not to talk of even knowing the types. The uptake of contraception in Nigeria is very poor compared to countries like the USA, UK, Canada and the likes. This is quite sad, considering that contraception has been proven to improve the health of mothers and children and avert death in both groups. With contraception, a woman can pl...

"I am having Toilet infection, please help"

Hello Beautiful people, I got a mail yesterday from someone asking me a health question. Let me share extracts of the mail with you then answer publicly as it may help one or two people out there. "Hi Dr. Anire, Please kindly advice. I've been having toilet infection with severe itching on and off for about 3 months now. I went to a chemist nearby who gave me some antibiotics but it seems to have gotten worse. What do I do?" Okay, thanks for the mail (you know yourself). For starters, there is nothing like toilet infection. It is a misnomer. It has not been proven scientifically that the toilet transmits vaginal infections. which I think is what you are trying to describe. Yes, the toilet can habour bacteria like all other places - sinks, surfaces etc. But it has not been implicated as a mode of transmission of vaginal infections. Vaginal infections are either sexually transmitted or opportunistic (I'll explain). What I think you have is an opportunistic infec...

The breasts are the ultimate sex symbol. Every woman loves her perky, firm, girls. And the men? Well, you can ask them yourselves. Babies definitely love their mama's boobs. They actually can't get enough of it. So breasts are loved by everyone, Men, babies and the women themselves. Having breasts that are perky and firm can contribute to a woman's confidence and every woman would rather the breasts stay that way forever. However, I'm sorry to disappoint you, they wont. Breast sagging is an inevitable natural event that will happen as you grow older and age. Whether you have babies or not, or choose to breastfeed or not. However, there are certain measures that can delay breast sagging. These are: -keeping a...
